Serging is quite easy, but there are a few supplies needed for serging to be successful. If you are new to the Learn to Serge Series, check it out here.
For any project these are the supplies you will need:
- tweezers (to thread your machine)
- scissors (to cut the thread)
- thread un-picker (in case you mess up…which everyone does!)
- 4 spools of thread to match your project (they can be bobbin size, medium, or the large spools)
- keep handy your Learn to Serge Series tutorials nearby for any questions!
Now, as we start our Learn to Serge Series, I am actually going to assign “homework” with each lesson. Well, homework might not be the right word; most of them are very simple little tasks. That way you have a project to practice during the week. The supplies you will need for these projects will be as followed:
Lesson 1: Practice threading your machine
- 4 spools of thread. Preferably the large size. I recommend a neutral color such as white or black. However, the small spools of thread will work just as well.
- Keep your tweezers handy, you will need them!
Lesson 2: Practice starting and stopping as well as unpicking your stitches
- Scrap pieces of fabric
- Thread un-picker
- Scissors
Lesson 3: Bag
- Cutting mat, rotary blade
- 1/2 – 1 yard of cotton fabric
- 1/2 – 1 yard of interfacing
- sewing machine to top stitch
Lesson 4: Maxi Skirt
- Cutting mat, rotary blade
- 2 yards of knit/jersey fabric. HERE is a great place to get some (if you are a new user you get a discount)
- Coordinating thread
- sewing machine to top stitch
Lesson 5: Ironing board cover
- cutting mat, rotary blade
- 3/4″ elastic
- 2 yards of fabric
- sewing machine to top stitch
Lesson 6: Diaper Changing Pad Cover
- Cutting mat, rotary blade
- 2 coordinating fabrics. First one: 19″ x 32″ , Second fabric: 30″ x 32″. If you want to use one fabric: 48″ x 32″
- 3/4″ elastic
- Sewing machine to top stitch
Lesson 7: Maintaining your Serger
- Serger manual
- serger oil
- Spray duster (like the ones they use on computer keyboards
- wipes (Clorox wipes or baby wipes…just to clean up the counter after spraying the spray duster)
- pipe cleaner or small brush
- screw driver
