Reading to your young kids is so important!! Here is a great resource of where to find high quality, new, cheap books!!

You NEED to READ to FEED your Brain

We received a fun package in the mail today! A stack of 5 books with stickers included! My son thought it was his birthday, he was so excited to open the books. I especially loved it because it only cost me $3.95! As soon as we opened the books up, we sat and read together 🙂 That is one of my favorite things to do with my son.

My pediatrician has always pushed us to read with our son ever since he was about 6 months old. He would talk about the importance of reading to your kids and how that’s one of the best habits we can teach him. I’ve since learned a few awesome benefits of reading to your kids!

I believe that as we read to our kids, it first teaches them the habit of reading. I’ve made reading a part of our daily routine. My husband and I both get involved. {My husband is especially good at reading in fun voices}.

Why do we need to create a habit of reading?

Reading is directly related to a child’s ability to learn. Studies have been done to show that if school-age kids read 20 minutes a day they are more likely to get As. Those kids who read an average of 5-10 minutes a day are more likely to get Bs. And obviously those kids who read less than 5 minutes a day are the students who most often receive Cs.

I’ve also heard that another great reason to read to your kids from an early age is because a baby’s brain is 90% physically developed before the age of five. I remember hearing that because I thought to myself, but that’s the age kids start going to school! Talk about the importance of young learning!!

Here are some other great reasons I found on National PTA that shows the importance of reading!

I also think that reading is an excellent time for my son and I to bond. We often lay on the floor together, lay in my bed, or curl up on the couch with a blanket and read a few books. It creates a few moments that we are physically close {that helps with brain attachment development}, but it also shows him I love to spend time with him. I tell him that, but when I read to him, I show him that.

My all time favorite book to read to him is Wherever You Are, My Love Will Find You by Nancy Tillman. Oh, I just love that book. It starts off by saying, “I wanted you more than you’ll ever know, so I sent love to follow you wherever you go.” It is such a tender book.

The package I was talking about earlier is something I just signed up for through a program called Early Moments. It sends you books every month {or as often as you’d like}. They tailor the package to the gender of your child, and they let you pick out which books you want sent to your home every time. We’ve decided to do this for a few reasons. It’s cheap. It’s easy. The books are new. But it is a super exciting thing for my son. He receives the package in the mail and he gets to open it. It helps add a special feeling to those books and it makes him want to read them even more! Win. Win. Win!

The first month they give you a discount at $3.95 (no s&h) and then the following months it’s $5.95 (no s&h). Awesome deal!

Anyway, I hope you feel motivated to read! It’s one of our family favorites!!
