The Importance of teaching your children about Healthy Sexuality

The Importance of Teaching Healthy Sexuality

It’s time to break down the importance of teaching healthy sexuality.

I’ve been talking all about my 7 by 11 online class and how awesome it is, but today we are going to dive into the details. Let’s talk about the importance of teaching your kids about healthy sexuality.

The Importance of teaching your children about Healthy Sexuality

So why? What is so important about teaching your kids about ‘the birds and the bees’?

The average age for children to participate in sexual activity is 12*.

I’ll wait a second while you are digesting that.

Yes, there is a problem in our nation. Our children are getting sent the wrong message; that in order to be accepted or of value they have to be sexual creatures. Girls have to be sexy and boys have to be sexual.

This message somehow needs a dramatic halt. This message needs to completely stop.

My theory – the most effective way we can begin to change that message is through you. Their parent. Their loving, aware, knowledgable parent.

You need to take action and be proactive about what you are teaching them, about what influences they have in their life, and about who they are becoming.

So, here are my top 7 reasons it is so important for you to talk to your kids about healthy sexuality.

Parents Perk Up!!! 7 important reasons YOU should talk to your kids about sex

Knowledge is Power.

Young adults who have knowledge of topics regarding their sexuality empower them to make good decisions.

To reduce the spread of STDs

The higher amount of children/young adults who are aware of the risks of sex are more likely to avoid these consequences. Which would reduce the spread of STDs.

To Lower the Rate of Unplanned Pregnancy.

Same thought applies here. We teach our children {meaning talk to them about it for years and years…not just one “birds and bees talk”} about sexuality because our bodies have the ability to create human life. That is serious. That is not something to be taken lightly. If you, as the parent, affectively communicate that the rates of unplanned teen pregnancies would dramatically decrease.

To set proper boundaries

Children need boundaries at every age. Boundaries will change and adapt with as the child does; but a child needs to understand boundaries. They will forever in their life be restricted in some way {a job, lack of finances, and on and on}.

When you teach about healthy sexuality, boundaries need to be apart of this. They need to understand where the lines are. This concept is in regards to their sexuality {don’t touch someone else’s private parts… all the way to don’t have sex til you are married…} as well as other healthy boundaries {drugs, finances, school, etc}.

To strengthen family bonds

Something happens when you are able to talk to someone about something so sacred and private. You become vulnerable and you build trust.

When you spend years talking to your kids about healthy sexuality you set the stage to help them know you care, you are aware, but that you are there for them. That process strengthens family relationships.

Human Sexuality is a normal part of life.

At some point your child will be interested to learn more. If you haven’t been the one “setting the stage” they won’t turn to you.

It should be you.

You can’t keep your child in a bubble; there will be something or someone, somewhere, somehow that introduces your child to sex.

It should be you.

If you are a “stat” kind of person, check out some of the top national stats {*from the CDC}. It also confirms that controlling sexuality is a problem among our youth.
